Located on the banks of the Mitchell River in Bairnsdale, Lucke’s Fresh Food Market has been in its current location since May 2005. But the story of Lucke’s began long before that.
The business started back in 1985, when David and Cathy Lucke began as a small husband-and-wife team specialising in wholesale meat sales. They later moved into retail, renovating and reopening an old butcher shop in the Old Butter Factory beside the Mitchell River.
It quickly became a popular shopping destination for locals, known for top-quality meat, genuine butcher shop service, and easy parking.
However, being so close to the magnificent Mitchell River came with one major challenge — flooding. After two major floods and the clean-ups that followed, the decision was made to move across the road to the big grey shed on higher ground.
After a major renovation, that shed became Lucke’s Fresh Food Market — expanding from a butcher shop into a true fresh food market offering meat, seafood, fruit and vegetables, groceries, and more.
Since then, Lucke’s has continued to grow and is now a proud local employer, supporting more than 60 local staff and apprentices.
Today, Lucke’s Fresh Food Market has become a local institution in East Gippsland, offering a unique shopping experience for locals and visitors alike.
As the saying goes,
“You’ve got to get down to Lucke’s.”
